"NO NO NO" on WMBR's Subject to Change and Sound Principles Programs

Beyonce's groundbreaking Homecoming featured a brief rendition of "You Don't Love Me (No No No)." This song, made famous by Dawn Penn in 1994 as "No, No, No," represents a bizarre alchemy of pop, reggae, and R&B standards. One can trace the song to 1955 wedding song ditty, "Wake the Town and Tell the People," and Bo Diddley's "She's Mine, She's Fine" from the same year. Willie Cobb's "You Don't Love Me" from 1960 provided the lyrical blueprint that Dawn Penn herself used for a 1967 rocksteady version that catapulted her temporarily to fame. With a brief detour to U Roy's 1970 proto-rap anthem "Wake the Town," we explore the resilience of this melody and song for more than six decades in a special 3-hour edition of PatNauseum.
